February Provides Opportunity To Become Better Healthcare Consumers

You may want to put an increased emphasis next month on programs of self-care and wise healthcare consumerism.

February has been designated National Wise Health Consumer Month by the American Institute for Preventive Medicine, which provides a variety of self-care products.

Some key issues to address this month, and throughout wise consumer programs, the institute said, include:

What is a real medical emergency?

When should I seek professional assistance?

Can I treat this illness myself and how?

How can I best communicate with my healthcare provider?

What should I know about medications?

How often should I have health tests and immunizations?

How do I decide between inpatient and outpatient surgery?

To help organizations implement wise consumer and self-care programs, the institute is providing a free National Wise Health Consumer Planner Packet, which includes a series of self-care and wise consumer activities you can implement, tips on how to become a better healthcare consumer, and a self-care guide. Organizations can receive a copy of the packet by contacting: American Institute for Preventive Medicine, 30445 Northwestern Highway, Suite 350, Farmington Hills, MI 48334; (248) 539-1800.
